What are the benefits of Home Automation?

The Luxaflex Evo MagnaTrack Awning has been engineered and tested in Australia to handle our diverse and unforgiving conditions and is the most technologically advanced straight drop outdoor blind on the market. The Evo MagnaTrack Awning harnesses the power of Rare Earth Neodymium Magnets within the side channels to hold the fabric in place, providing a smooth flat finish with unparalleled strength, allowing it to be left down in windy conditions. Making the Evo MagnaTrack awning the perfect addition to outdoor entertaining and alfresco areas to allow you to enjoy your outdoor space while maintaining sun, wind and rain protection as well as light control and privacy all year round.

The benefits of home automation include:

  • Reduced energy consumption: Control heating, cooling and lighting through window coverings, thermostats, air-conditioners, fans and lights. Home automation allows each device to work individually or together based on user preferences or external conditions.

  • Convenience: Automatically carry out routine tasks that would be performed daily, whereby at the press of a single button when leaving the house - the lights will switch off, blinds come down and the security system is activated.

  • Comfort: Set the perfect ambience for the theatre room by a single button press, lights will dim, blinds come down, the air conditioner will turn on to your preferred temperature and your projector and AV system switch on.

  • Security: Configure the home automation system to give the illusion someone is home by having your lights turn on/off as well as having your blinds open and close while on holidays.

Which Solution is right for me?

Luxaflex Window Fashions has a wide range of internal and external products that can be controlled from a central hub, offering a low-cost home automation solution for window coverings that allows smartphones and tablets to operate, set scenes and schedules, and even operate remotely when you are away from home.

Integrating into 3rd party home-automation systems is also possible via various connection methods, including wireless ZigBee, Dry Contact (Open, Common, Close), RS-232 Serial and 4 core power cabling (2x active, natural & earth). These methods may require additional relays, modules or interfaces to allow integration into the home-automation system.

A wide range of automation systems are available, which are traditionally broken up into two categories:

  • Wireless systems: Designed for installation into existing houses without hardwired systems. Wireless technology eliminates the need to run cables behind walls which allows for easy installation and setup. ‘Do-it-yourself’ solutions are becoming increasingly popular with examples including Google Home, Control4 and IFTTT (If This, Then That).

  • Hardwired systems: Typically seen in new home builds, hardwired systems require each switch, sensor or device to be centralised to one location through wiring. These wired systems are extremely reliable as each device is hardwired, eliminating communication and interference issues. Due to the increased complexity of installation, it is advised that a professional design and install hardwired systems. Examples of hardwired home automation systems include C-Bus® and Dynalite®.

  • What is the difference between motorised and automated blinds?

Motorised blinds are operated using a remote control, wall switch or app, allowing you to raise or lower them without manual effort. Automated blinds go a step further—they integrate with smart home systems or timers to operate automatically based on schedules, temperature or sunlight.

While all automated blinds are motorised, not all motorised blinds are automated. Automation adds convenience, energy efficiency and can enhance home security when used with sensors or smart assistants.

  • Can I connect motorised blinds to my smart home system?

Yes, many modern motorised blinds are compatible with smart home platforms like Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. With the right hub or integration, you can control blinds using voice commands, smartphone apps or routines that sync with lighting and climate settings. This allows for seamless automation—such as closing blinds at sunset or when the room gets too warm—enhancing both comfort and energy efficiency in your home.

  • Are motorised blinds worth the investment?

Motorised blinds offer convenience, improved safety (no cords) and enhanced energy efficiency through precise light and heat control. They’re especially beneficial for hard-to-reach windows or for users with mobility concerns. Though they cost more than manual options, they often pay off in comfort and potential energy savings. Automation features can also increase property value and modernise the look and function of a home, making them a worthwhile investment for many households.
